Activity TWENTY FIVE: MODELING MOON PHASES
This Activity was very difficult to photograph due to the darkness of the room.
The FLASH made it difficult for the students to adjust and determine the shaded and illumunated parts of the foam ball.
So I will describe the Activity and provide a Photo of the Materials.
PROCEDURES
1. We Began by arranging the entire class in a semicircle facing the light source. Using a
pencil,we poked a hole into the top or bottom of a large foam ball. Then pushed the pencil into the hole to create a “handle” for the foam ball.
2. Then we darken the room and held the Moon in front of the light
source and ask students from various parts of the semicircle, How much of the Moon appears to be lit? Since the students were
viewing the moon from a different angle, the answers varried
3.Now that the students are introduced to PHASES, we distributed a globe, a globe base, and a small foam ball to
act as the Moon. the teams were around a light source,to demonstrate the counterclockwise motion of the Moon around Earth with their models.
Then the students demonstrated the position of the Earth, Moon, and Sun that results in a particular phase. Here we introduced and modeled the 8 moon phases
4. Next we distributed a sharpened pencil and large foam ball to each group and arranged the students in
in a circle around the light source. Students held the spheres at arm’s length in front of them while they were facing
the light source. When they moved the spheres slightly to one side or the other, a thin crescent of light appeared on their spheres.
5.Finally, starting with their foam balls directly in frontof them, the students began to rotate
counterclockwise holding the foam balls slightly above their heads. By doing so, they modeled the motion of
the Moon around Earth. Each students stoppped and identified each of the 8 moon phases.
6. The students completed Activity sheet 25 where they drew and identified the 8 moon phases
